This is the basic view you will have when using MathType

1. "Math" will assume you are writing equations and try to identify mathematical terms You cannot add spaces while in "Math" mode. Clicking here you can change the mode to "Text" which will allow you to type full words and add spaces.

2. These two rows are drop down menus for selecting various symbols and functions. When a cursor is over one of these buttons, the area where style appears (step 1) will change to show words describing the button.

3. These are tabs that have context specific symbols for faster location of needed symbols and functions.
